Have you ever seen a movie that you just can't stop thinking about? "Brooklyn" was that movie for me. I attended a screening of "Brooklyn" without even having seen the trailer. I read the synopsis and jumped at the chance to see it.
Film Synopsis:
BROOKLYN tells the story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan), a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Lured by the promise of America, Eilis departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s home for the shores of New York City. The initial shackles of homesickness quickly diminish as a fresh romance sweeps Eilis into the intoxicating charm of love. But soon, her new vivacity is disrupted by her past, and Eilis must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within. The film is directed by John Crowley from a screenplay by Nick Hornby based on the novel by Colm TóibÃn. The film also stars Domhnall Gleeson, Emory Cohen with Jim Broadbent and Julie Walters. The film is produced by Finola Dwyer & Amanda Posey. The filmmaking team includes director of photography Yves Bélanger, production designer François Séguin, set decorators Jennifer Oman and Louise Tremblay, editor Jake Roberts, music by Michael Brook, and costume designer Odile Dicks-Mireaux.
"Brooklyn", based on Colm Toibin's book of the same name, begins in Ireland with Eilis (pronounced like Aylish) starting her journey to the United States and follows her journey to America back to Ireland and back to America again.
Historically, the 1950s were a tough time in Ireland. Half a million people emigrated out of Ireland. That was a huge number especially considering the population of Ireland at that time stood at around 3 million people. With agriculture declining, the young Irish had to find steady work. (source).
Eilis' sister Rose feels that Eilis would be better off going to America as there are more opportunities. Leaving behind her mother and sister, Eilis embarks on a journey. A journey of discovering where HOME is, who she is, finding love and friendship in a land of strangers. On the boat she asks another Irish girl (who already lives in Brooklyn) how long a letter takes to reach Ireland, she replies "They take a long time at first and then no time at all".
Eilis' life in America begins. Living in a boarding home with several other single ladies and the witty (and HILARIOUS!) Mrs. Kehoe, a job at Bartocci's (like Macy's), and the priest (who arranged her travel) having her start taking night classes for bookkeeping.
The loneliness starts to dissipate once she meets the handsome Italian, Tony, and her friendship with her roommates blossom.
Throughout "Brooklyn", there are scenes that will have you laughing until you have tears streaming down your face (Mrs. Kehoe's dinner conversations, the giggling roommates, her roommates teaching her how to eat pasta, and dining with Tony's family). There are so MANY quotable moments. "Giddiness is the 8th deadly sin!"
There are scenes that will have you in tears.
Parts that will make you feel disappointed and feel like your heart has dropped into the deepest pit of your stomach.
There is sadness. There is love. There is happiness. There is heartbreak (hers and almost mine). ALL THE FEELS!
Finally, there is HOME. Home is home.
From the costumes to the dialogue, every minute of Brooklyn was memorable. Eilis' story was brought to life with beauty, humor, grace and an arsenal of talent.
BROOKLYN stars Academy Award nominated Saoirse Ronan (ATONEMENT, THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL), Domhnall Gleeson (EX MACHINA, UNBROKEN), and Emory Cohen (THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES).
Saoirse Ronan's portrayal of Eilis is absolutely stunning. Emory Cohen as Tony will melt your heart. He's absolutely adorable and his portrayal of Tony exudes a sweetness and innocence that makes you want to bring him home. The ensemble cast is absolutely magical.

I honestly can't stop talking about Brooklyn. It's truly a journey.
It's a winner.
I love period movies. My living room shelves are overflowing with DVDs and Blu-rays and many of them are period pieces and costume dramas and "Brooklyn" WILL be added to my collection.
Let's just say... if you love The Notebook, About Time, Pride & Prejudice, etc., you will fall in love with Brooklyn.
