Many thanks to memBrain for sponsoring today’s story and encouraging me to share my hero!
I am blessed. I have been so fortunate to know so many amazing, smart, strong, and passionate women. How can I limit my hero to just ONE woman? I can't.
I just can't.
And I won't.
I am not sure that I can limit the heroes to just a few but I will try. I was going to write about my amazing, beautiful and smart daughter but you already know that she's my hero. *Cue Bette Midler's Wind Beneath My Wings* Everything that has overcome, every setback, every surgery, every scare, every new disability- she just keeps trucking. She amazes me every single day (ever when she's being a typical tween that wants to drive me to an early grave) and I am proud to say she is MY personal hero.
I was going to write about my mom. A woman who raised nine children and did the best she could. A woman who, when diagnosed with stage IV small cell lung cancer, took the diagnosis with grace. When she learned that treatment was futile, she thought of my father and the burden planning her funeral would place on him (he was also sick from cancer at the time, too). She planned her own funeral and tried to alleviate as much financial strain on him. She knew how hard her passing would be. She's a hero. MY hero.
I thought about my sisters- I have beautiful and caring sisters who have given so much to taking care of others. They've loved, they've lost and faced incredible heartbreak. However, they have persevered. They've taught me that life goes on and to appreciate what I have, what is here and now and to embrace the day. They're my heroes. My nieces and cousins. All beautiful, loving and strong women.
I thought about my friend, Kodi. She's a fierce advocate for not only her son but for children with disabilities. She fights tirelessly. She's a hero who fought against the State of Louisiana.
So, I am surrounded by amazing women who are Big. Damn. Heroes. (Browncoats.... )
Needless to say, I am one lucky woman to be inspired by such amazing women.
Annie Leibovitz wants to honor Women Heroes with her exhibit "Women: New Portraits"
In 1999, Leibovitz published Women, a book of portraits made in collaboration with Susan Sontag. The popular series of photographs was accompanied by an exhibition that opened to great acclaim at the Corocan Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
Launched in London in January 2016, the UBS x Leibovitz collaboration continues to explore the changes in the roles of women today while bringing to life one of the greatest art exhibitions of the 21st century.
The tour will travel to ten host cities over the course of twelve months. Each venue will be selected based on its unique architectural context within the host city as well as its ability to attract both local and global attention.
Exhibition cities include the following:
• London
• Tokyo
• San Francisco
• Hong Kong
• Singapore
• Mexico City
• Istanbul
• Frankfurt
• New York
• Zurich
